It’s time for the first big trophy of the season to be handed out as we get ready for the 2024 League Cup final at Wembley this Sunday. The two clubs left in the running have fought hard to get to this point, and it’s safe to say they’re pretty familiar with one another. Today, we’ll be previewing Chelsea vs Liverpool in a rematch of the final from two years ago.
Chelsea Form GuideThis season hasn’t been particularly fruitful for Mauricio Pochettino and while it may not seem like it, a lot rests on how his Chelsea side perform in this final. If they win, it could serve as a big boost for the remainder of the campaign. If they lose, and the board take another look at their place in the table, it could be the beginning of the end for his reign at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea’s run to Wembley began with a 2-1 win over Wimbledon in the second round. They proceeded to edge past Brighton 1-0, and then in the round of 16, defeated Blackburn 2-0. In the quarters, they beat Newcastle on penalties, before overcoming a first leg loss to Middlesbrough with a 6-1 second leg win in the semi-final.
Liverpool Form GuideLiverpool Football Club are in the midst of their final season with Jurgen Klopp at the helm. As they continue to compete on four different fronts, the big focus is on picking up as much silverware as they possibly can between now and the gaffer’s big farewell. They’re the favourites here, as you’d expect, but they can’t allow themselves to get too complacent.
Liverpool have conceded in every League Cup game they’ve played so far this season, but in the grand scheme of things, they’ve still fared pretty well. They beat Leicester in the third round, Bournemouth in the round of 16, West Ham 5-1 in the quarters and then Fulham 3-2 on aggregate over two legs.
Match PredictionThe games between these two sides as of late, especially in big cup clashes, tend to be a bit nervy. We expect more of the same in this collision with our prediction being that we won’t see many goals. At the end of the evening, though, it’ll be Liverpool living the trophy high thanks to a narrow victory.
