The Turkish Super Lig returns once again this weekend as we continue to march through the winter months. There’s a clear picture beginning to form at both ends of the table as all 20 clubs attempt to build some momentum before we enter the final third of the season. Today, we’ll be taking a look at what should be a fun clash between Istanbul Basaksehir and Fenerbahce.
Istanbul Basaksehir Form GuideDespite only being founded back in 1990, Istanbul Basaksehir have been able to make a real splash over the last few decades - and especially in the last couple of years. It was only back in 2019/20 that they won the Super Lig for the first time in their history, and since then, they’ve reached the final of the Turkish Cup and have really established themselves as one of the top dogs.
Istanbul Basaksehir did well to take the lead against Fatih Karagumruk and for long spells, they were in full control of the game. Then, the hosts went down to ten men, and Basaksehir seemed to be coasting to a 1-0 win - only for Salih Dursun to equalise in the 88th minute for a stunning draw.
Fenerbahce Form GuideFenerbahce are still recognised as one of the biggest club in Turkey, but the point must be made that it’s been a long time since they lifted the Super Lig title up high. While we’re only half way through the current season, it already seems like they’re going to be tussling it out with Galatasaray for that honour - as has been the case so often throughout their history.
Fenerbahce dominated Samsunspor over the weekend and took a deserved lead in the 12th minute through Irfan Kahveci. Unfortunately for them, their dominance didn’t lead to the result they wanted, as the underdogs scored a second half equaliser to give Fenerbahce’s title push a knock.
Match PredictionThe funny thing about this game is that by all accounts, Istanbul Basaksehir should have more than enough in the tank to cause the visitors some real problems. The issue with that, though, is the overall quality of Fenerbahce and their momentum - which is why we’re predicting them to edge out a win.
