We’ve reached the FA Cup fifth round and this is where the remaining sixteen clubs can really start to dream about a place at Wembley. There are drastically different teams left in the competition and with so much on the line, we’re excited to see how these eight games play out. Today, we’ll be taking a look at one of the most interesting matches of the round as Liverpool play host to Southampton.
Liverpool Form GuideJurgen Klopp’s farewell season as Liverpool manager is guaranteed to end with at least one trophy after they won the League Cup last weekend. Alas, we imagine they’ll be pretty eager to make a return trip to Wembley in May. They have all the talent necessary to make that push, but the one thing they can’t afford to do is get complacent under the pressure.
Liverpool were dealt a tough draw in the third round against Arsenal, but they made the most of it with a 2-0 win that many don’t feel like they deserved. From there, in the fifth round against Norwich, they looked really comfortable in a strong 5-2 victory.
Southampton Form GuideSouthampton may be back in the Championship, but they haven’t allowed that to dampen their spirits. They are one of the favourites for promotion this season and even though they aren’t officially a Premier League team, they still play with that kind of intensity. Hopefully for their sake, they are able to take that energy into a tie of this magnitude.
The Saints battered Walsall 4-0 in what proved to be a walk in the park kind of tie in the third round. They went on to draw 1-1 with Watford in the fourth, but they made up for their shortcomings in the replay in a dominant 3-0 win.
Match PredictionSouthampton’s confidence has taken a bit of a knock in recent weeks but even with that being the case, we’re still of the belief that they’ll go to Anfield and give the hosts a reallly good game. With that being said, the only result we can realistically picture is a Liverpool victory.
