We’re into the final furlong now as we approach the last few games of the Ligue 1 season. French football has really come into its own since last August with a campaign full of exciting twists and turns at both ends of the table. Now, it’s all a case of seeing who can hold their nerve. Today, we’ll be taking a look at what should be an interesting clash between Marseille and Lorient.
Marseille Form GuideThey may have fallen away in the title race last season, but Marseille still serve as one of the biggest clubs in French football. They have a tremendous fanbase, they have an exciting squad full of real potential, and they come across as a team with ambition. Alas, all of that will be left redundant unless they can make everything click behind the scenes - and with their management.
Marseille experienced renewed heartbreak this past week as they were beaten by Atalanta in the second leg of their Europa League semi-final. In terms of the league, they’re actually coming off the back of a pretty big win, as they overcame Lens in a really nice 2-1 victory.
Lorient Form GuideLorient looked far more composed last season than they did the year prior when they found themselves edging towards the relegation zone. Alas, this time around, they’re right back where they don’t want to be - and they’re showing no signs of vaulting themselves out of trouble. It’s still pretty tight with a handful of games to go, but things are definitely looking precarious.
Lorient huffed and they puffed but for whatever reason, they just couldn’t blow Lens’ house down last weekend. They were beaten 2-0 and as their chances to pick up points continue to slip away, more and more fans are realising that relegation may well be inevitable at this stage.
Match PredictionLorient have work to do and we think there’s a chance they’ll really go for it in this one. Alas, we believe that would be a mistake, and that they’re better off trying to work on the counter. Either way, we don’t think they’ve got too much of a chance, which is why we’re backing a Marseille win.
